Thermaltake BlacX SE SATA Docking Station

Thermaltake is among the best thermal solution developers. The company has been designing high quality cases for years and has always catered to gaming fanatics. With innovative designs and performance minded features, Thermaltake has managed to keep its head above the water in the ever troubling waters of the IT world.

Although mostly designing cooling accessories/peripherals and gamers targeted enclosures, the company has also taken a leap into the storage accessories market. One of it products is called the BlacX SE and represents a SATA HDD docking station designed to easily make use of an internal SATA drive. The interesting thing about the device is the unique patented design which can hold 2.5” drives or 3.5” drives without any modifications.

Maximum storage is set at 1.5TB which is the maximum HDD can hold these days anyway. The docking station connects to the PC through the use of an USB 2.0 port and at the same time acts as an USB 2.0 hub, providing users with 4 additional connections. So, in fact, users gain 3 USB connection.

The device can only use SATA I or SATA II devices is not compatible with IDE drives. The USB 2.0 connection is fast enough to accommodate most of the high end hard drives with high transfer rates. The 60MB/sec should provide enough speed for most multimedia needs.

For prehistoric computers the station comes with Windows 95 and 98 drivers, all the way up to Vista (which doesn't require drivers). There's also Mac 10.3 (and higher) support. The device is designed to be as compact as it can and only takes up about 15 square inches on your desk. The open design also allows for maximum heat dissipation and exhaust.

A great usage for the BlacX SE would be cheap and simple backups. Just buy a drive, plug it in, format it and you're ready to start saving your precious files. Don't forget it has hot swap support so you can swap drives like wild, without having to shut down the system.

The device, together with the required accessories is available for $69.99.
